Obituary
Roland J. Cook, 84, of Browntown, Wisc., veteran of World War I, died at 6:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Monroe Manor Nursing Home where he had been a patient since last August. Death followed old age complications.
He was born in Earlham, April 24, 1895, to Will and Emma Smith Cook. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1914.
On June 16, 1917, he married the former Esther M. Nealley in the home of her parents in Earlham.
He entered military service Dec. 19, 1917, at Guthrie Center, Iowa, and was discharged Jan. 17, 1919, at Fort Worden, Wash. He was a private with the medical department in the U.S. Army.
Following his discharge, he farmed for a short time and then became a postal clerk Oct. 20, 1924, in the Chicago area. On April 10, 1927, he was transferred to the Browntown Post Office where he was a rural carrier. He retired Jan. 1, 1958.
Survivors include his wife, Esther; a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Arloa) Klarer, Monroe, Wisconsin; two sons, Francis, at home, and Marlin, Fort Pierce, Fla.; 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Walter and Bernard, both of Earlham, and a sister, Mrs. Mabel Mau, Whittier, Calif.
Preceding him in death were his parents and 2 brothers, Leonard and Gerald.
He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Browntown, and of the American Legion.
Funeral rites were conducted January 29 in the Peace United Church of Christ, the Rev. David Hunt, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Cadiz Cemetery.
