Obituary

Carl Schafer was born on May 13, 1898, the oldest son of seven children born to Charles and Anna Schafer and passed away November 2, 1977, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 19 days. He was raised on the farm and was confirmed in Zion Lutheran church in Dexter on March 16, 1913.

He was united in marriage to Anna Marie Marsh on February 11, 1920. To this union five children were born: Marjery, Mrs. Donald Appell of Earlham; Edwin of Springfield, Virginia; Audry, Mrs. Eugene Fox of Oxnard, California; Ruth, Mrs. Gordon Thorsen of Bozeman, Montana, and Judy, Mrs. John Craigmile of Earlham.

They began farming in Madison County. Later they moved to Denver, Colorado and on to St. James, Minnesota, returning to Iowa in 1943 where he spent the remainder of his life. He retired from active farming several years ago and recently moved to their new home in Earlham.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Katie Scar of Dexter. Surviving are his wife, children, 18 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, also his brothers, Herman of Earlham, Pete and Walter of Dexter, and one sister, Nanie, Mrs. Fred Fillman of Paton.

Carl enjoyed farming and hunting and fishing. He enjoyed the attention and frequent visits of his children, grandchildren and friends. Though plagued by a lifetime of asthma, he and Anna had many blessings for which they were very grateful.

Memorial services were held at Zion Lutheran church in Dexter on Saturday afternoon, November 5, with the Rev. E. A. Breiholz of Van Meter, officiating. Casket bearers were Scott Appell, Steve Clausen, Joe Alexander, David Miller, Jeff Craigmile, Todd Craigmile and Scott Schafer. Interment was at the Dexter cemetery under the direction of the McKee Funeral Home.
