Rites Held For Roy Hutzell, 76

Roy R. Hutzell, longtime Algona businessman, died unexpectedly at his home Monday night, August 1.

Funeral services for Mr. Hutzell were at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 4 in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Newton Coughenour of Winterset officiating. Burial was in East Lawn cemetery, Wilson’s of Algona in charge of arrangements.

Casket bearers were Wes Bartless, Earl Aldrich, Blair Redenius, Dixon Young, James Andreasen and Elmer Dole.

Roy, son of Edward and Daisy Fenn Hutzell, was born July 28, 1901 at Farnhamville. In 1913, he moved with his family to Earlham where he graduated from high school in 1920. He was married to Mabel Wetrich at Des Moines June 22, 1927.

Mr. Hutzell managed the Ford agency in Redfield and Laurens, and began working for the International Harvester Co. The Hutzells moved to Algona in 1937 and he managed an International Harvester Store there until 1941 when he went into business for himself as Cities Service Bulk Oil Co. operator. He retired in 1968, but worked with Earl Aldrich until 1974.

Roy Hutzell was an extremely civic-minded man and as a member of the Algona Kiwanis Club, had 36 years of perfect attendance. He received the outstanding secretary award, and was past Kiwanis president and currently held the position of secretary. He was a member of the Algona city council 11 years, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was formerly chairman of the Board of Trustees and was finance chairman. He was also a member of the Methodist Men’s Club, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Kossuth County Historical Society.

Mr. Hutzell is survived by his wife, Mabel; and one son, Floyd of Algona. There are six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

One brother and six sisters also survive: Lawrence, Algona; Lela, Mrs. John McCarty, Perry; Ethel, Mrs. Clark Melton, Linden; Ora, Mrs. Sheldon Strong, Earlham; Mrs. Violet White, Des Moines; Mabel, Mrs. Willard Barnett, Earlham; and Arol, Mrs. Roscoe Fiscel, Adel.
