Earlham Echo – February 8, 1973

Obituary

Chester King Ledlie, son of Joseph Lyle Ledlie and Nancy King Ledlie, was born in Earlham, Iowa, October 22, 1888. He died at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines January 30, 1973 after a two week’s illness.

He was educated in the Earlham schools, graduating in 1908. When he was 12 years old his father took the family to Ireland to visit his birthplace. Here Chester had the opportunity to attend school for six months, where his father had gone to school.

After his graduation from high school he went to business college in Des Moines and then spent some time in North and South Dakota. He was advised to seek a warmer climate for his health. So, in 1910 he went to New Mexico.

On December 2, 1912, he and Ruby Davis of Lake Arthur, New Mexico were married. They were the parents of two daughters, Marianna Ledlie of Earlham, and Opal (Mrs. Tom Wood) of Des Moines.

After his marriage, he and Ruby moved to Iowa but after a few months they returned to New Mexico where they homesteaded. Here Chester was engaged in farming and ranching. He also worked in the oil fields as a tool dresser.

He returned to Earlham with his family in June 1926 and has resided here since that time. He was engaged in farming here, and also did well work. His services in this capacity were in great demand especially in the dry years.

Chester and his wife were members of the Methodist church in New Mexico, so when they returned here they brought their membership to the Earlham Methodist Church. Along with his membership he served on many of the committees and boards of the church.

He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Dexter Lodge No. 215; Stuart Encampment No. 81; and Eva Ann Rebekah Lodge No. 197 at Dexter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby, in 1959; his parents; a brother William; and two sisters who died in infancy.

He is survived by his two daughters, Marianna and Opal; five grandchildren and one great granddaughter; a niece and cousins.

Chester will be greatly missed by his relatives and his many friends and neighbors, with whom he was always willing to lend a helping hand or give an encouraging word.

Memorial services for Chester Ledlie were conducted by Rev. Ward Young at the Earlham United Methodist church on Friday, February 2. Dolores Summy provided suitable music at the organ. Casket bearers were Leslie Goeldner, Frank Inman, LeRoy Fuller, John L. Brown, Woodrow Cly and H. Claude Peer. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery. Fisher Funeral Home made the arrangements.
