Earlham Echo – February 4, 1971

Former Echo Editor Died in Oregon

Maurice Van Nelson, former newspaper editor, publisher and Portland businessman, died Wednesday, January 27, of heart failure at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland. Memorial services were held at 4:00 p.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran church, Beaverton, with Rev. T. P. Brueckner officiating.

Born in Earlham, on July 30, 1905, Mr. Nelson started his newspaper career during his high school years on the hometown paper, the Earlham Echo, which he later edited and published.

In 1935 he moved to Oregon to publish the Rainier Review at Rainier, Oregon and subsequently the North Lincoln News-Guard at Delake, Oregon. During the course of his career he was associated at various times with the Timberman magazine, the Portland Sun and Business Printing Co. in Portland, the Outlook at Gresham and the Telephone Register at McMinnville.

Mr. Nelson owned and operated Nelson Sales Co., a northwest Portland retail business from 1951 to 1962.

Immediately prior to his retirement he worked at the Oregon State Printing plant in Salem.

He is survived by his wife, Viola; two sons—Capt. Peter M. Nelson of South Australia and Roger J. Nelson of Los Angeles, California; and one daughter—Mrs. Linda K. Frost of Bend, Oregon; and three grandchildren—Duane and Susan Nelson and Michael Frost.

The family suggests remembrances may be contributions to the Heart Association.

The family residence is at 3160 SW Ridgewood Road, Portland, Oregon where they have lived since 1949.
