Rosa June Smith, the oldest daughter and child of James Vanatta and Myrtle Paisley McClure, was born July 23, 1885 near Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa and passed from this life February 13, 1973 at Horton’s Nursing Home at Winterset, Iowa.

December 16, 1903, she was united in marriage to Asa Smith of Earlham, at the United Presbyterian Church in Winterset where she had moved with her parents. To this union were born eight children. Their first, Lucille Pauline born in 1905, died 8 days after birth; the other seven survive. One of her happiest moments was the celebration of their 50th anniversary December 16, 1953. Rosa and Asa spent their first 30 years of married bliss on farms near Earlham, with the exception of 3 years near Lorimor. In 1934 they moved to Dexter, when Asa lost his eyesight, and she has lived here since that time. In the winter of 1970 she became a resident of Horton’s home near Winterset and has been in failing health since that time.

As a child Rosa became a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion, Iowa, transferring her membership to Winterset after marriage, thence to the West Star Church, Penn Center Methodist Church, the Earlham Methodist church and finally to Dexter where she was an active and devoted church member until ill health prevented her presence. She was also a charter member of the Dexter Navy Mother’s Club; the American Legion Auxiliary for approximately 20 years; a member of the Happy Hour Club, Garden Club and the Golden Agers. She loved people, enjoyed her neighbors and friends every day.

In 1938 Rosa became employed by the Library Board of Dexter when it moved into its new building and was assistant librarian and custodian there until 1960. She was also employed by Creager’s Café 3 years.

Rosa’s hobbies were reading and sewing and enjoying her family, at which time she was happiest.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Asa, December 20, 1958; her child Lucille in 1905; and her sister, Della Smith of Earlham in January 1971.

Surviving Rosa are her seven children: Gladys (Mrs. W. A. Countryman) of Earlham; Raymond and Homer Smith of Des Moines; Myrtle (Mrs. Edward McCormick) of Pleasant Grove, Utah; Lyle Smith of Council Bluffs; Wilma (Mrs. Jack Williams) of Dexter; and Ila (Mrs. John Dolan) of Perry. Also one granddaughter, 19 grandsons, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, a brother Will McClure of Winterset and many other relatives and friends who will greatly miss her pleasant smile in their midst.
