To Helmer G. and Laurine Anderson Qualley was born an only daughter, Gwendolyn Helen, on July 28, 1921, at Hills, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in Bethlehem Lutheran church in Hills. Her school days were spent in Hills and at junior college in Worthington. She graduated from what was then Iowa State College in Ames in 1943 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics Education. She had become a member of Sigma Kappa sorority there. She taught Home Ec. In Earlham until 1947.

She was united in marriage with Warren A. Piatt on September 6, 1947, at Hills. They have resided in the same home in Dexter since their marriage. To them were born three children—Keith, Barbara and Janice.

Warren and Gwen have been active in their membership in the United Methodist church in Dexter. Gwen enjoyed her membership in the United Methodist Women, 20th Century Club, Dexter Woman’s Club, P.E.O. and the Dexter Library board.

Gwen’s greatest joy was her family and entertaining her family and friends in her home. Friends were always included in family celebrations and holidays.

She passed away Friday, June 3, 1977, at her home following a sudden heart attack. Surviving are her beloved husband and three children—Keith of Dexter and Barbara and Janice of Des Moines, and a multitude of relatives and friends.

Gwen Piatt, 55 succumbs to heart attack

Dexter: An overflowing crowd was in attendance at the memorial service for Gwen Piatt, 55, held June 6 at the United Methodist Church, who died unexpectedly of a coronary attack Saturday, June 4. Rev. Robert Farr was in charge of the service. Music was furnished by Elinor Chapler.

Casket bearers were Bill Beattie, Lloyd Clague, Lee Hildebrand, Don Lawhead, Jim McMenamin, Virgil Sanborn, Laverne Schaaf, and George Struck. Interment was in Penn Center Cemetery by the McKee Funeral Home.
