Obituary

William Nelson Stump, son of Walter and Jennie Crawford Stump, was born in Van Meter Township, Dallas County, on December 12, 1895. He died suddenly in his home in Earlham on Monday, November 1, at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 20 days.

He enlisted and served in the United States Army from September 20, 1917, to May 15, 1919. He was a life-time member of the American Legion and was recognized as a 50 year member in 1969.

On September 24, 1921, he married Ethel Marie Golden in Adel. The marriage was blessed with six children.

Following his marriage he lived at both DeSoto and Van Meter, being a brick mason by occupation. He was well known in the surrounding community for the many homes and buildings he helped construct.

He was preceded in death by his wife on November 1, 1954. Also preceding him in death were two sons, Max and Maurice, and one daughter, Phyllis, two brothers and one sister.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Elenore Morris of McLeansboro, Illinois, Mrs. Lorraine Martens of Winterset, and Mrs. Margaret Miles of Broomfield, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; one great grandson; five brothers; Harold of Dallas Center, Roy, Martin and Floyd of Des Moines, and John of Los Banos, California, and one sister, Mrs. Opal Sutherland of Big Bear Lake, California.

Funeral services were held at the Chamberlain-Fisher Funeral Home in Van Meter on November 5, 1976 with Pastor E. A. Breiholz in charge.
