Obituary

Edward George Tough was the seventh child born to James and Ellen Tough on December 4, 1892 in Kellogg, Jasper County, Iowa. He took leave of this life May 12, 1976, at Madison Manor North in Winterset where he had resided for six weeks. Prior to that Ed had spent eleven weeks in the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.

Ed was united in marriage with Emma Paulsen November 25, 1920 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1970. Ed and Emma had no children, but they mothered and fathered Martha Rice Letz when she was a young girl.

Ed entered the service of his country on April 29, 1918 and served in the Tubercular hospital in Prescott, Arizona as a cook. He was discharged on August 25, 1919 and was a member of the American Legion for many years.

Ed will be remembered as owner and operator of the café, from which work he and Emma retired. They resided for a time in Odebolt, Iowa and then returned to Earlham during the second World War. Ed was a hunting and fishing enthusiast and enjoyed his yard and garden. He was a carpenter and was quite adept at refinishing antique furniture. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Kellogg, Iowa, where he confessed his faith at the altar as a young man. He attended the Earlham Presbyterian Church.

Services were held May 14th at the Earlham United Presbyterian Church. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
