Earlham Echo – June 2, 1976
Hugh Dale Neff was born December 21, 1916, to Hugh Roy Neff and Evea Blanche Powell Neff at Earlham, Iowa, and died May 13, 1976, as a result of a plane crash on Mt. Jefferson, north of Bend, Oregon where Hugh and his wife Hilda were living since 1972, and where he was employed at Beaver Coaches at Bend. Hugh was laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose, California.
Hugh attended the Earlham Schools through high school and was baptized into Christ September 1924 in the Earlham Church of Christ.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Hilda of Bend, Oregon; a son Patrick Hugh and his wife Joanne and their two daughters, Jill and Erin, of Santa Ana, California; a daughter Linda of Bend, Oregon; four sisters: Opal McLaughlin and her husband, Wendell, of Des Moines; Ruby Phelps and her husband, Willis, of Flagstaff, Arizona; Norma Odisio and her husband, James, of Sun Valley, California; and Beverly Sepe of Santa Barbara, California; one aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Hibbs of Earlham, Iowa; two nieces, three nephews, many cousins, and a host of friends. Also Hilda’s children, Barbara Powell and her husband, Mark and their two children, Jason and Lauri, of San Jose, California; Gordon Jacobson of Gilroy, California; and Richard Jacobson and his wife, Chris, of Livermore, California.
Hugh will be remembered for his high ideals, integrity, quick grin and a sense of humor which made for his happy outlook on life. His zest for living was reflected in his love for flying. He was an active member of the Oregon Pilot’s Assoc. which initiated many close friendships. His hobbies included golf, and citizen’s band radion on which his CB contacts knew him as “Ole Yeller.” He was loved and respected by many lasting friends; a kind, loving husband, father, and brother who will be greatly missed by all.
