Raymond E. Mendenhall, son of John and Mira Mendenhall, was born on a farm north of Earlham, December 5, 1889. He passed away in a hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas on December 15, 1975 after a brief illness.
Raymond’s early education was acquired mostly at the Bear Creek school and Earlham Academy. He was a 1912 graduate of Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Later he did graduate school work, specializing in History, Social Science and Education.
He had an extensive teaching career in high schools and colleges in Iowa, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas and Arkansas. Most of his retirement years were spent in Ft. Smith.
Raymond Mendenhall was a member of the Wilmington Friends Meeting, Wilmington, Ohio. He was an active member of the Upbuilders Class at the First Methodist church of Fort Smith. He also enjoyed the meetings of the Senior Citizens Club of the city.
His survivors include his wife DeOla, his daughter Mildred Burnham of San Jose, California, his step daughter Dorothy Watts of Red Oak, Texas, several grandchildren, one sister Mildred Standing of Earlham, and nieces and nephews. Charles and Martha Mendenhall of Earlham represented Raymond’s Iowa relatives at the funeral services on December 17. A very appropriate service was held at Fentress Funeral Chapel at Ft. Smith. Interment was at Bluff View, a beautiful cemetery at the foot of Mount Magazine.
