R. L. Rose, 78, Dies at Hospital
Russell L. Rose, 78, of No. 9 Hidden Wood, chairman of the board of the News Tribune Co., Inc., died Tuesday, September 16, at Memorial Community Hospital in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Mr. Rose joined the News Tribune on March 17, 1930, as advertising manager.
He later became executive vice president and general manager of the News Tribune and radio station KWGS and KWOS-FM.
Mr. Rose decided against retirement and remained active in the management of the newspaper until the time of his death when he was chairman of the board.
William Weldon, News Tribune Co. publisher, praised Mr. Rose as “one of the finest gentlemen I ever knew and a true Christian in every sense of the word. He will be sadly missed by everyone.”
Mr. Rose was born March 17, 1897, at DeSoto, Iowa, the son of Perry Ernest and Rowena Maude DeClereq Rose. He was a graduate of Earlham, Iowa Academy, and the University of Iowa.
Mr. Rose was a native of Des Moines, Iowa, and had lived in Jefferson City for the past 45 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War I.
A member of the First Christian Church, Mr. Rose was a Mason and a member of the High 12 Club and Grotto. He also was a member of the Kiwanis Club.
On October 26, 1924, at Earlham, Iowa he was married to Esther Elizabeth Crosswait who died in 1973.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ramona Halbrook, Redmond, Washington, and two sisters, Mrs. Peter Anderson, Des Moines, Iowa and Mrs. Harold Ganoe, Madison, Wisconsin.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, September 19, at the Houser Funeral Service chapel, with the Rev. Harry Spear officiating.
Burial was in Riverview Cemetery.
