Obituary

William Norris Benson was born May 31, 1863 in Dallas county near Earlham, Iowa, and spent the early part of his life near here. On July 3rd, 1884 he married Sarah Ellen Curts. They went to North Dakota in 1902 and filed on a homestead three miles north of Sawyer. They were among the first people to settle in that community.

He was converted when he was sixteen years old and lived a Christian life. The Bensons were members of the United Brethren church in Iowa and joined the church of the Nazarene soon after it was organized at Sawyer, where he was still a member. He was active in the church, being Sunday school superintendent a number of years in Iowa and at Sawyer, also serving on the official board.

On the 3rd of July 1934 they celebrated their Golden wedding.

During his final illness he was considerate of those who waited on him. His last testimony was that he was ready to go. He leaves to mourn his departure five children, Mrs. George Reinholdt, Mrs. E. H. Peterson, Mrs. C. F. Peterson, George Benson and Hugh Benson. Also his mother 91 years old, one sister Mrs. E. Josie Brown of Earlham; an adopted sister and brother. Eva O. Morgan of Redlands, California; and Chas. E. Benson of Earlham. Also a number of nieces and nephews; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Benson preceeded him in death, sixteen weeks to the day and hour.

Funeral services were held at the Friends church Sunday afternoon at two o’clock with the sermon by Rev. H. S. Mitchell, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment in the Earlham cemetery.
