JOYCE BROWN, Villisca

Joyce Verniece Brown, 80, of Villisca died Oct. 23, 2008, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 26, at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Clarinda with Pastor Bob Keefer officiating. Burial was at Villisca Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Joyce Brown Memorial Fund in c/o Starr Scott, 1711 Patricia Acres, Winterset, IA 50273.

Joyce Brown was born Oct. 13, 1928, in Marion County to William and Johanna (Van Englenhoven) Den Adel. She grew up on a farm north of Pella and attended the European No. 1 (Bell School). Her marriage to Robert Earl Brown took place June 7, 1949. Over the years, they resided in Pella, Ottumwa, Maryville, Mo., Bethany, Mo., Corning and Villisca. Joyce worked as a bookkeeper for the Villisca Hy-Vee Food Store and as a receptionist in the office of Dr. James Wyatt in Red Oak. She served on the Villisca Pre-School Board and Interchurch Council, was a church deacon, Sunday school teacher, confirmation mentor, choir and bell choir member, and longtime member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association. Additionally, she was a longtime volunteer hairdresser at the Good Samaritan Center. As a breast cancer survivor, in 2008, she was an honorary co-chair for the Montgomery County Relay for Life, as well as a longtime participant in various breast cancer groups and projects.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, of Villisca; four children — Charm Faith Smith of Tabor, Starr Tiara Scott of Winterset, Chele Diahn Garder of Blair, Neb., and Shawn Robin Brown of Bloomington, Minn.; three siblings — Donald Den Adel and Fern Uitermarkt, both of Pella, and Ruth Fazio of Carmel, Ind.; and 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
