ROY STEWART, Earlham

Roy James Stewart, 88, of Earlham died of congestive heart failure Nov. 6, 2008, at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee.

A Christian Funeral Mass was held Monday, Nov. 10, at St. John’s Catholic Church in rural Adel with Father Al Sherbo officiating. Burial was at Van Meter Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. John’s Catholic Church or the Van Meter American Legion. Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.

Roy Stewart was born Feb. 20, 1920, to Rex and Bernice (Woodman) Stewart of Casey. Roy graduated from Van Meter Community School and attended Iowa State College prior to serving in the United States Army, 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) during World War II. Among the numerous military awards he received for service to his country were the “Order of the Purple Heart” for injuries received during fighting in the Hurtgen Forest and three “Bronze Battle Stars” for heroic or meritorious achievement while engaged against an armed enemy. Roy fought in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a charter member of the Van Meter American Legion Post 403. He also was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.

His marriage to Hazel M. Smith of Van Meter took place in 1943 at Fort Meade, Md. Roy and Hazel farmed near Van Meter until 1963, when they purchased a farm north of Earlham. Following his wife’s death, Roy moved to The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Max, of Bondurant.

He is survived by one son, Lyle Stewart of Marengo; four daughters, Diana Houlette of Des Moines, Gwen Rhoades of Topeka, Kan., Mary Shepherd of Riverside, and Ann Wolfe of Taylorville, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Roy J. Stewart, 88 of Earlham, died at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee on Thursday morning, November 6, 2008, of congestive heart failure.

Mr. Stewart was born in Casey, Iowa on February 20, 1920 to Rex and Bernice (Woodman) Stewart. Roy graduated from Van Meter Community School and attended Iowa State College prior to serving in World War II I the United States Army, 1st Infantry Division, “The Big Red One”. Among the numerous military awards, Roy received for service to his country were the “Order of the Purple Heart’ for injuries received during fighting in the Hurtgen Forest and three “Bronze Battle Stars” for heroic or meritorious achievement while engaged against an armed enemy. Roy fought in Europe including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a charter member of the Van Meter American Legion Post 403.

He loved his family, enjoyed daily devotional readings, playing cards, watching football and basketball.

He married Hazel M. Smith, also of Van Meter, at Fort Meade, Maryland in 1943. To this union were born four daughters and a son. They lived and farmed near Van Meter until 1963, when they purchased a farm north of Earlham. After Hazel’s death in May 2007, Roy moved to The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee.

He is survived by children: Diana (John) Houlette of Des Moines; Gwen (Richard) Rhoades of Topeka, KS; Mary (Sam) Shepherd of Riverside; Lyle (Cherylann) of Marengo; Ann (Jim) Wolfe of Taylorville, IL; twelve grandchildren; four great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, and brother, Max of Bondurant.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at Kuhn Funeral Home, 140 NW 2nd, in Earlham on Sunday, November 9, immediately followed by a prayer service. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, at St. John’s Catholic Church, south of Adel, of which he was a member. Burial will be at the Van Meter Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to S. John’s Catholic Church, and Van Meter American Legion.
