Clarice M. Mains, 78, of Perry died of a heart ailment Friday at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Perry, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center.

Miss Mains was born in Guthrie County and had lived in Perry since 1954. She was a retired teacher and had taught in Guthrie County and Perry. She was a member of the Iowa State Educational Association and the National Education Association. She enjoyed reading.

A brother, Leonard Mains of Winterset, survives.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church. Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset is handling arrangements.

Funeral services for Clarice Mains, 78, Perry, were held Jan. 14 from the First Baptist Church in Perry. Miss Mains died January 10, 2003, of congestive heart failure at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Interment was in the Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center.

Clarice M., daughter of Bessie Messinger and Jesse E. Mains, was born in Guthrie County March 24, 1924. She attended rural schools and graduated from Guthrie Center High School. She received a teaching degree from Simpson College and started her teaching career in Seeley Township schools. She was hired to teach elementary classes in Perry in 1954, moving there at that time. Clarice taught in the Perry School District for 32 years, retiring with 40 years of service in education in 1986. She received a Masters Degree in Education from Drake University in 1969.

Clarice enjoyed reading and visiting. She was a member of the Iowa State Education Associating, National Education Association and First Baptist Church in Perry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and wife, Loyd and Edith Crawley. Survivors include her brother, Leonard and Marlene Mains of Winterset; nieces, Luann Waldo of Bayard and Linda Tutt of Indianola; and nephews, Louis Crawley of Tempe, AZ; Larry Crawley of Oxford, MI, and Lyle Mains of Texas.
