Mrs. Walter Benjamin Dies

Mrs. Walter Benjamin died at her home in Winterset yesterday morning after an illness of several months. She contracted a severe cold early in the winter, from which more serious complications developed resulting in her death at the age of 73.

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin moved here from Warren county in 1902. Mrs. Benjamin leaves her husband, one son, David, and one daughter, Mrs. George McCorkle; also two orphan boys aged six and nine years, who have been cared for by their grandparents since the death of their mother six years ago.

Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. L. M. Kirby of the West Star M. E. church conducting the service.

Ida E. Morse was born in Bradford, N. H., March 16, 1852. In 1855, when three years old she moved to Clinton county, Iowa, and lived near Delmar.

In June, 1877, she was married to Walter Benjamin and lived near Delmar until 1897, when they moved to Indianola. After living five years in Indianola, the family moved to Jackson township, this county, where they resided seven years and then moved to Winterset. Three children have preceded their mother in death. Orrin, the eldest, died in 1920, Mary in 1918 and one child in infancy. Besides her husband, two children live to mourn her departure: David, who lives in Jackson township; and Edith, wife of G. E. McCorkle, who lives near Earlham. There are also nine grandchildren.

At the time of the death of their daughter, Mary, her two children, Robert and John Hamilton, were taken by Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin and have since been cared for by them.

Mrs. Benjamin was a member of the Relief Corps, and has been for forty years a member of the Methodist church. She will long be remembered for the active part she took in the work of the church at West Star. She was a charter member of the Ladies’ Aid society and with her family took an active part in the work of building the present church building. Since moving to Winterset, she has taken such part in the church as her health and circumstances would permit.

Mrs. Benjamin has been in very poor health all winter. About a week ago, she became much worse and failed rapidly, passing away Wednesday morning, Feb. 18th at the ripe old age of 72 years and 11 months.
