Obituary

Mary Esther Moore, eldest child of Earl and Jessie Richards Newton, was born February 9, 1911 at Tingley, Iowa and passed away after a lingering illness at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines at the age of 54 years, 7 months and 16 days.

She attended school in Ringgold county and graduated from the Mt. Ayr High School in 1930.

She was united in marriage with Keith Johnston August 10, 1930 and to this union was born one daughter Phyllis. Her companion passed away November 11, 1951. For several years she served in the capacity of clerk in the Ringgold county treasurer’s office.

On July 30, 1955 she was married to Guy Moore of Earlham and since then had made her home in Madison county on a farm.

In her early years she became a member of the Mt. Ayr Christian Church where she was a faithful and diligent worker in the activities of the church. When she moved to her new home she transferred her membership to the Worthington Methodist church where she continued to work as long as her health permitted.

She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star in Mt. Ayr, and in Earlham where she served as an officer. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Mt. Ayr.

She was preceded in death by her father; also her brother Richard who lost his life in World War II.

She is survived by her husband Guy; her daughter Phyllis and husband W. D. Butler of Nevada, Iowa; her mother, Mrs. Jessie Newton; a sister, Mrs. Perry Kaster; and a brother, Sam Newton, all of Mt. Ayr. Also surviving is a step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Mills and husband of Whittier, California; 2 grandsons, 4 step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was always happiest when doing for others.

Funeral services were held at the Prugh-Dunfee Chapel in Mt. Ayr on Monday, September 27, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Milton Haedt, assisted by Rev. William Morehouse with interment in Rose Hill cemetery at Mt. Ayr.

L. O. Patten, Gene Golightly, George Mills, Ivan Pryor, Roy Payne and Leo Stuck served as casket bearers.
