Earlham Echo – March 10, 1965

Obituary

Claude B. McBride, the son of Joseph R. and Ida Wilson McBride, was born at Dexter, Iowa, June 27, 1898. His death on Tuesday, March 2, 1965, came suddenly from a heart attack at the noon hour.

In 1916 the farmily moved north of Earlham, where he engaged in farming for a number of years. Since 1933, he made a home for his mother until her death in 1952. Since then he and his sister, Flossie McBride have lived in the Earlham home.

Following the death of a sister Grace Houseman, he assumed the care of one of her small sons, Allen, who looked to him as a father whose love and a good home were generously given.

For a few years he worked for the Commodity Credit Corporation. On March 1, 1950, he was employed by the Earlham Farmers’ Elevator and for fifteen years and one day he has been a faithful and dependable employee.

His quiet interests in home, reading, the constructive institutions of the community as the church, school sports, and others, are well known to many. He was kindly neighbor and a citizen of steady and solid character.

Surviving are four sisters and one brother. They are: Carrie Murray of Adel, Iowa; Flossie McBride of Earlham, Iowa; Ruby Gibbons, Redfield, Iowa; Myrtle Brennan, Carlisle, Iowa; and Joseph McBride of Olewein, Iowa. His nephew, Allen Houseman of Alphine, Oregon is also among those surviving. There are many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who will greatly miss his kindly interest.

The funeral service was held in the Earlham Friends Church on Saturday, March 6, at 1:30 p.m. The pastor, L. Willard Reynolds, was in charge of the service. Singers were Gertrude Conrad and Lucille Schalkle, Helen Ludwick was the organist. Casket bearers were Russell Hester, Russell Ralston, Sheldon Strong, Amor Routh, Frank Inman, Roland Conrad and Graham Godby. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery. Roy E. Evans was the funeral director.
