Obituary

Funeral services were held at the Earlham Church of Christ for Loyal Gilbert on Friday, November 27. Rev. Milton Hendrickson was in charge of services.

Loyal Royal Gilbert, youngest son of Joseph and Elizabeth Houswort Gilbert, was born July 8, 1887, southwest of Earlham, and departed this life at his home at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 16 days.

On July 8, 1911, he was united in marriage to Della L. Dunbar of Earlham. To this union were born three sons, Delbert Jessie of Des Moines, Verlyn Loyal of Earlham and Marlyn D., also of Earlham.

He was educated in the schools of Madison County, graduating from the Earlham Academy in 1908. He followed farming in Penn township until 1939 when he moved into Earlham. He was associated with the Gilbert Café for many years and also served several years as the night marshal for the town.

He will be remembered by the community as a friend to all, always ready with a friendly greeting and a cheery smile.

He was a member of the Earlham Church of Christ, joining in November 1924. He faithfully served his Lord as long as health permitted.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving him are his wife, Della L.; three sons, twelve grandchildren, two brothers, Frank of Earlham and Ray of Leon, two nephews Albert Gilbert of Earlham and James Gilbert of Gladbrook, also other relatives and a host of friends.

Note: Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
