Obituary

Ralph Frederick Mattheis was born May 8, 1900 at Cumberland, Iowa, and passed away in Wilden Hospital, Des Moines, on Sunday June 14, 1964 at the age of 64 years, one month and 6 days. He was the youngest of two children born to Mathilda Weber Mattheis and Frederick Mattheis.

On November 23, 1940, he was wed to DeEtta Johnson in Des Moines. He is survived by his wife and a brother Clarence D. Mattheis of Anita; two nephews, Dwight Mattheis of Hartley, Duane Mattheis of Cresco; and two nieces, Dorothy Mattheis Ross of San Diego, California and Donna Mattheis Wallace of Des Moines.

He was a lifelong member of the Christian Church, having transferred to Early Chapel Christian Church from University Christian Church, Des Moines. At Early Chapel church he served as an Elder, a teacher and disbursing steward and in numerous other capacities.

He entered Postal Service work on June 20, 1923 and retired as Foreman from the Railway Post Office and Highway Post office on July 20, 1962 after serving almost 40 years in the Postal Service at Cumberland, Iowa, Chicago, Illinois, and Des Moines, Iowa.

The Mattheis’ have resided in Earlham for the past 8 years coming to this area from Des Moines.

Funeral services were held at the Early Chapel Christian Church at 2:00 p.m. on June 16, 1964 with Graveside services at the Earlham cemetery.

He had been in ailing health for the past three years.
