Lyons obituaryDeath of Mr. D. W. Lyons.
Died, Wednesday, November 20th, at 3 a.m., at his home just west of Winterset, D. W. Lyons, aged 73 years. Mr. Lyons’ health had been fast failing for several months on account of heart trouble, which finally affected the brain and rendered him more or less unconscious of his surroundings for two or three weeks previous to his death.
David W. Lyons was born in Harrison county, Ohio, in the year 1822. He was educated at Franklin college, New Athens, Ohio, and was also a graduate of Western Theological college, at Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He was a Presbyterian minister for a few years in Ohio. He came to Iowa in 1849, continuing in the ministry and organizing several churches. In 1857 he retired from active ministerial work on account of failing health, though he continued to lead an active and industrious life even up to old age.
Mr. Lyons was a man of more than average natural ability, and of an energetic, enterprising nature. With some peculiarities of disposition, he was most kind-hearted and charitable toward his fellow men and those who knew him best often had occasion to appreciate these qualities.
The immediate members of the family now bereaved by his death consist of his wife, a son and five daughters by a previous marriage, and one son still in boyhood. He was a most loving and indulgent father, and was repaid with the devoted affection of his children.
The funeral was held at the home this (Friday) afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, the services being conducted by the Rev. B. E. S. Ely, pastor of the Presbyterian church. His children were all present. With the exception of two daughters who live at too great a distance to be summoned in time.
Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
