E. W. Jones Dead.

Died, at his home in this city last Monday morning, Mr. E. W. Jones. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. B. E. S. Ely, assisted by Rev. Fred Harris.

Deceased was born in Wales in 1835. When a young man he came to this country and was for a number of years a resident of Wisconsin. About the year 1866 he came to Winterset and has been an honored citizen of this city ever since. For many years he was one of our leading merchants. He served two terms on the school board and one or two terms as member of the city council. On February 14, 1888, he was married to Miss Maggie Cox. To them was born one daughter, who is now about five years old. Three sons by a former wife also mourn the loss of a father. Two of them are in business at Pitzer and the other one is in California.

For the past two years Mr. Jones had been in poor health, and during that time he had made several trips –one to California –in the hope of regaining his former strength and vigor. But he gradually grew worse and for several months had been almost constantly confined to the house.

Mr. Jones was a good, Christian gentleman, having united with the Presbyterian church shortly after his last marriage. He bore his suffering with fortitude and met death with the peace and serenity which only a Christian and one who is reconciled to his Maker can experience. Peace to his ashes.
