The sudden death of Mr. P. V. Carpenter of Virginia township, on last Monday night, removes from his family a kind and beloved husband and father, from John Miller Post G. A. R. a loyal comrade, from his country, a brave and reliable defender, his church a consistent member, from his community an excellent neighbor and from the world a man worthy to remain but prepared for removal.
In his early manhood, in the prime of life, health and prospects he rallied to the defense of his country’s flag, and as one of Co. K. 10th Ia. Inf. did battle nobly until stricken down and grievously wounded, by reason of which he continued to suffer for his country for more than forty years.
His funeral cortege was an immense and sorrowing procession of bereaved relatives and sympathetic friends. The funeral was from the family home under the suspices of his Post.
Burial in the St. Charles cemetery at 9 p.m. necessitated by the circumstances and was an imposing occurrence as seen by the brilliant light of the score of lanterns carefully located. The beautifully prepared grave, the graceful mound and the little flag, he so dearly loved, one of nature’s noblemen.
The funeral was from the home under the auspices of his Post. A full measure of sympathy is accorded the sorrowing and widowed wife and orphaned children. Rev. Wilkinson, pastor of the Church of Christ, to which the deceased had long belonged, preached an appreciated discourse and the choir of that church provided vocal music.
Another grave in our cemetery to receive the kind attention of those who delight to honor the country's departed defenders.
