GENE JONES, ANKENY

Arthur Eugene “Gene” Jones was born April 29, 1922, near Winterset, Iowa, to Arthur and Florence Jones. He was raised on a farm in rural Winterset. During his high school years, he participated in many sporting activities. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1940.

After graduation, he married Betty Grace Smith on May 28, 1941, in Canton, Ohio, where he was playing professional baseball. After his career in baseball, they returned home to farm in Iowa. Gene was primarily a husband and father, but enjoyed many different sporting activities. Gene’s favorite pastime was playing softball with his family in their backyard. Of course, he was always the pitcher. His children and grandchildren were his top priority, attending their school activities. He was a longtime member of the Elkhart Christian Church.

Gene passed away Friday afternoon, June 6, 2008, at Sunnyview Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa, at the age of 86.

He is survived by three children — Karen (Wayne) Twedt of Huxley, Iowa, Kathie (Curtis) Olenius of St. James, Minn., and Dennis (Peggy) Jones of Davenport, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Blanche Cummins; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and brothers Glen and Robert.
