Thursday, January 28, 1904Isabelle McCullough McQuie was born in Creeton, Scotland, died January 4, 1904, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 19 days. Was united in marriage to Peter McQuie April 15, 1855, and had she lived ‘till next April they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
To this union was born 7 children, all of whom were present at the funeral services. Mr. and Mrs. McQuie left their native land 48 years ago for America. They settled in Illinois where they lived 15 years and then removed to Iowa. They settled in Penn township, Madison county, where they lived for 32 years and where by industry, economy, upright and honest dealing they secured for themselves a home and a competency.
Aunt Isabelle, as she was commonly called, joined the established Presbyterian church of Scotland at the age of 19 years. Thus for 53 years did she live a Christian loyal to her church, her family and her home. She has passed to the great beyond, there to receive the crown of eternal life which is promised to the finally faithful. The large crowd that gathered at the home that cold day was evidence of the esteem and respect in which she was held.
Funeral service was conducted January 22 by Rev. H. D. Garret of Pitzer U.P. church. Text, Job 14-14 “If a man die shall he live again?” After a very practical talk on this text the remains were tenderly laid away in the Penn Center cemetery. Uncle Peter the father and husband was unable to attend the funeral on account of bodily weakness and the coldness of the day. It was sad indeed to see the old gentleman sit there and weep while his life companion was carried out of the door for the last time. May the grace of God comfort and sustain the grief stricken family is the earnest prayer of one who has shared their kindness and hospitality many times, during his 25 years of acquaintance.
_________________________Coordinator's note: Although the obituary says she died January 4th, the gravestone says January 19th which is more consistent with the date of burial.
