Last Rites May 18 For Ross Reynolds

Funeral services were held for Ross J. Reynolds, 69, Wednesday afternoon, May 18, at the Earlham Methodist Church. He died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines May 16 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage several weeks ago.

Mr. Reynolds, who was widely known in this community, had worked for Earl Schalkle in his store for the past 36 years. He was a harnessmaker and a skilled leather worker by trade. Before coming to Earlham he had been in business at Dexter.

Mr. Reynolds was very active in the Methodist Church, having served in most of the offices throughout the years. He also was active in the Masonic lodge, having served as secretary of the local lodge for many years. He was a member of Des Moines Consistory and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.

He is survived by his wife Hazel, two daughters Mrs. Gordon Hoey of Denver and Mrs. Ed Mathews of Des Moines, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, two brothers Roy of New York and Ray of Florida.

Music for the services was provided by Mrs. Phillip Duff at the organ in addition to solos by Mervyn McLennan accompanied on the piano by Mrs. McLennan.

Honorary casket bearers were Roy Payton, Fred Peterson, Lloyd Mendenhall, Oren Hadley, Homer Ross and F. J. Hibbs. Acting casket bearers were L. O. Patten, Chas. Soderberg, Claire Gipple, Earl Schalkle, Willard Hadley and A. L. Allen. Ushers were Fred Hodson, Dale Mills and Robert Branam.

Ross Jay Reynolds

Ross Jay Reynolds the youngest son of John and Emily Reynolds was born near Bear Creek in Dallas county, Iowa, December 11, 1890. After a severe illness of three weeks he passed away May 16 at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines at the age of 69 years.

His early life was spent in the Bear Creek community where he attended school and graduated from the Earlham Academy in the class of 1908.

He was married on June 14, 1911 to Ella Pearl Nolte at Dexter, where they established their home and he engaged in the merchandise business for 14 years. They were the parents of three children, Arlene, Gaylord and Eleanor. On December 27, 1918 their home was saddened by the death of their four year-old son. A year later the wife and mother also passed away.

On April 16, 1922 he was united in marriage to Hazel Parker of Dexter. In 1924 the family moved to Earlham to make their home.

Mr. Reynolds was a birthright member of the Bear Creek Friends church. In early manhood he united with the Dexter Methodist church. He later transferred his membership to the Earlham Methodist church were he remained an active and faithful member until his death. He served on the official board as a teacher and Sunday School superintendent for many years.

He was a Past Master of Madison lodge No. 268 A.F. and A.M. serving as an efficient secretary for the past 29 years. He was also a Past Patron of the Earlham Eastern Star Chapter. His association with members of the Scottish Rite Consistory and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple of Des Moines gave him a great deal of pleasure.

Ross Reynolds was a devoted husband and father with the happiness and welfare of his family always supermost in his thoughts. His talent as a salesman and skilled craftsman enabled him to find lasting satisfaction in his work as an Earlham business man for 36 years.

He especially enjoyed the fellowship of people—in his church, fraternal organizations and business association. His wide circle of friends and relatives often accepted the hospitality of his home and the warm welcome always to be found there.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel and two daughters, Mrs. Ed Mathews of Des Moines and Mrs. Gordan Hoeye of Denver, Colorado, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, also two brothers, Ray of Trumensburg, New York and Roy of Jacksonville, Florida, and other relatives.

Note: Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
