Scyrus C. Moreland, next to the youngest of eight children, seven sons and one daughter, of John W. and Mary Moreland, all of whom have preceded him in death, was born near the town of Secor in Woodford County, Illinois, on June 3, 1872. He passed away at a Des Moines hospital on April 19, 1960 at the age of 87 years, 10 months and 16 days.

He grew to manhood on a farm near Secor and on September 28, 1893, was married to Elizabeth Wurmnest of Secor. They made their first home on a farm near Clearfield in Taylor County, Iowa, later purchasing a farm near Orient.

In the spring of 1902 they came to Earlham where he established a lumber yard, later adding the grain, feed and coal business, which he continued to operate until the fall of 1918.

In 1927 he leased the D-X Oil Service Station where he continued to serve the community, meet and visit with his friends and neighbors for some twenty-one years.

Since 1949 his home and family, his yard and garden have occupied his time.

To this home came three children, John J. of Earlham, Royal H. who passed away on June 17, 1954, and Marie (Mrs. Harold McFarlin) of Dexter. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, the son John and daughter Marie; four grandchildren, Mrs. Helen Shifflett and Kenneth McFarlin of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Dorothy Mock of Hobokus, New Jersey, and Dorrence Moreland of Earlham; twelve great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Si, as he was called by all who knew him, loved the outdoors, especially to fish and hunt, and in years past enjoyed many hours with hook and line on ‘Coon River, following the hounds in search of fox or wolf, and in hunting geese and ducks at the lakes.

He was always ready and willing to lend a hand and did contribute generously of his time and substance to the community. He was of a quiet and unassuming nature, but made and kept many friends.
