JUDD UMSTED Died on Jan. 14

Judd I. Umsted of Winterset, a well-known resident of Madison County since 1940, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1969, at a Des Moines hospital. He was 72 years of age.

Mr. Umsted was a native of Dayton, where he was born Dec. 25, 1896, a son of William and Stella LeValley Umsted. His active life was spent in farming. He moved to the Macksburg community in 1940, and farmed there until his retirement in 1952, when he moved to Winterset.

He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the American Legion and the World War I Veterans. He was also affiliated with the Masonic lodge and Eastern Star.

Mr. Umsted was a member of the First United Methodist church of Winterset.

He was married at Des Moines on Nov. 29, 1918, to Rose L. Eklund, who survives him. One of their sons, Dwain R. Umsted, died in 1950. He leaves two sons, Charles Umsted of Hawthorne, Calif., and Gene Umsted of Winterset; five grandchildren, one great grandchild; four brothers, Forrest Umsted of Harcourt, Clyde Umsted of Truro, LuVerne Umsted of Lanyon, and Earl Umsted of St. Charles, Mo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Francis Echelberger of Dayton and Mrs. Lydra Brye of Waverly.

Funeral services were held Friday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Everett K. Burham, pastor of the First United Methodist church here. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery, with Masonic ritual at the graveside.
