Wednesday, April 26, 1916MRS. JEFFERSON WHEAT
Ruth B. Vernon was born in Belmont county, Ohio, Oct. 3, 1843. She was the oldest of ten children, five of whom are still living as follows: Mrs. Debora Graves of Knoxville, Elizabeth Shullmyer of Hartford, Amanda Hagan of Colorado, Martha Wright of Woodburn, Rebecca Bland of Prole. The family came to Iowa in 1850 and settled in Cedar county and a few years later came to Warren county.
Ruth, the subject of this sketch, was married to Jefferson Wheat at Knoxville, Dec. 5, 1866. They settled on a farm near St. Charles, where they continued to live until they moved to Winterset in 1883. Mr. Wheat had been previously married to Sarah Jane Smith, who died in 1859, to whom was born one son, Albert Warren, who went west many years since. G. W. Gearhardt of Des Moines, became the adopted son of Jefferson and Ruth Wheat when ten years old and was one of the family until his majority.
Mrs. Wheat was raised a Quaker, but on her marriage joined the Methodist church, of which her husband was a member. She remained a faithful and devoted Christian during her life. She was also a member of the Woman's Relief Corps from the beginning of that organization here.
The funeral services were held from the Methodist church Thursday, April 20th, Rev. M. M. Cable officiating. The Woman's Relief Corps also rendered their beautiful service.
