Walter E. Hughes died Saturday, May 12, 1973, at his home near Winterset at the age of 62 years. Death followed a heart attack.
Mr. Hughes was born at Naper, Nebr., on June 8, 1910, a son of Maurice J. and Ethel Kelly Hughes. Most of his early life was spent in Nebraska. He later moved to Lamoni, where he drove a truck for Hy-Vee Grocery stores. In 1941 he was inducted into the U. S. Army. Following the war he had engaged in farming.
He was a member of the Green-Rogers post of the American Legion at Winterset.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving as a member of the priesthood for the last 15 years. He was on the building committee of the Indianola church of that faith, and was church treasurer for 20 years.
Mr. Hughes was married Nov. 25, 1944, to May Hutchcroft Grannaman, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Mary Alice, of Independence, Mo.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Joan Konopasek of Kellerton; four step grandchildren; a brother, Reuben Hughes of Columbus, Nebr.; and four sisters, Mrs. Vera Self and Mrs. Belva Baldwin of Independence, Miss Bessie Giles of Kellerton and Mrs. Dora Hartford of New Jersey.
Funeral services were conducted from the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints in Lamoni this Tuesday by Elders Donald E. Harvey and F. P. Edgington. Burial was made in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
