ROGER ORR, Boone

Roger Orr, 79, of 1525 1st Street in Boone, Iowa passed away at his home on Sunday morning, April 20, 2008.

Roger was born December 13, 1928, in Boone, Iowa the son of Clarence and Elsie (Anderson) Orr.

He graduated from Boone High School in 1947, and attended Boone Junior College and Drake University, graduating in 1954, with a degree in Business and Business Education.

Roger enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1949, attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Artillery. He served in a variety of command and staff positions, retiring honorably in 1969 as a Lieutenant Colonel, and received a brevet promotion to Colonel with over 20 years of service.

On July 16, 1949, Roger married Jeannine Lindmark and had three children: Barbara, Michael, and Timothy.

He started his career as a high school Business Education teacher and Principal from 1954 to 1964 in Earlham, Iowa. In 1965, he started as a Sales Representative, in the publication sector, and was later promoted to district manager for a 13 state district, until his retirement. In 1974, the family moved to Boone.

Roger was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church, former member of the Masonic Lodge in Earlham later transferring to Mt. Olive Lodge #79 AF&AM in Boone, and served as Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star in Winterset, Iowa. He was also a member of the American Legion, Turkeys Forever, Iowa National Guard Officers Association, National Guard Officers Association, and Reserve Officers Association. Roger served six years on the Earlham City Council. He had also been active with Boy Scout Troop #132 at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone. He enjoyed working on his cabin in the woods, hunting, trapping and fishing. He was a good man, who’s bright smile will be missed by many.

His parents and brother, Everett preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife Jeannine of 58 years; a daughter Barbara Orr of Boone, IA; two sons, Michael Orr and wife, Linda, of Arvada, CO; Tim Orr and wife, Suzanne, of Johnston, IA; grandchildren; Chris Orr of Fort Collins, CO; Katy and Kelly Orr both of Fort Collins, CO; and Jacob and Elizabeth Orr both of, Johnston, IA. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Elise Orr of Camanche, IA; Sharon Lantz and Fern Eldien both of Boone, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Wednesday afternoon, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boone with Rev. Philip Webb officiating.

Interment with full military honors conducted by the Iowa National Guard will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday morning from 8 to 11 a.m. when the casket will be taken to the Church where visitations will continue from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service.

The family will be present at the Chapel on Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to greet friends.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Boone.
