RUSSELL FREY, Winterset

Russell J. Frey, 92, of Winterset died March 24, 2008, at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 27, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. Visitation with the family will be from 6–8 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 26) at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines or the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset (c/o Ochiltree Funeral Service, Box 261, Winterset, IA 50273).

Russell Frey was born Nov. 9, 1915, in rural Pitzer to George and Clara (Jackson) Frey. He attended grade school in Jackson Township and was a 1934 graduate of Earlham High School. Russell began farming following graduation and continued farming until 1941, when he joined the United States Army at the beginning of World War II. His marriage to Martha Lytle took place March 12, 1943. Besides farming near Winterset for most of his life, Russell also worked for Madison County, grading the roads of Jackson Township. He lived and worked on his farm until moving to Madison Square at the age of 87.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, and a great-grandson.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Frey of Denver, Colo., and Nick Frey of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a brother, Richard Frey of Winterset; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
