MRS. HANORA RYAN

Hanora Riordan was born in county Kerry, Ireland, in 1832 and came to the United States in 1841 with her mother, one sister and two brothers. She died Aug. 16, 1913.

She was married to John Ryan in Connesville,Ind in 1850. They came to Iowa, and settled in Warren county, the summer of 1852. They moved to Madison county in 1853, occupying a farm in Crawford township up to the time of her death. She was the mother of nine children and had 61 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. One daughter and two sons preceded her to eternal reward some years ago, which left a vacant place in that dear mother's heart.

She and her husband suffered many of the hardships and privations of pioneer days, as the old spinning wheels and carding machinery, candle molds and ox yokes, which are still preserved clearly show. She was always kind and considerate of others, willing to assist a worthy cause, always loved sincerity and disliked pretentions. She was well and favorably known through Madison and Warren counties and particularly in Winterset, where she and her family have many friends.Being a widow some 35 years ago with six small children her ability as a manager and financier has been clearly demonstrated by the home and property which she has held and added to.

At her bedside at the time of her death was the entire household, who kneeled in solemn prayer for mother dear. Grandma, as she was called by her grandchildren, will be sadly missed in the old home. She always loved to have her grandchildren about, listening to their childish talk and to amuse them with stories of happy childhood days and brush away their childish tears. During her last sickness, she was patient to the last and bore her suffering with the courage of a true christian, who knew that she had nothing to fear from Him who doeth all things well.

The funeral was held at Saint Patrick's church, August 19th, followed by a large number of friends and sorrowing relatives, where she was laid to rest beside her husband, there to sleep till the judgment morn.
