SARAH ANN COWDEN

Sarah Ann Acheson, second child and oldest daughter of Robert J. and Margaret Duff Acheson, was born among the picturesque hills and dales of western Guernsey county, Ohio, Nov. 5, 1827. She was baptized and grew to young womanhood in the locality of the Northfield congregation of which she became a member under the ministry of Rev. Daniel McLean. She was united in marriage with David Cowden of the same community on May 28, 1845. There husband and wife remained faithful members until they moved to Iowa in the fall of 1857. After a residence near Winterset of about 13 years, they relocated in Jackson township, where they resided for their remaining years. Here again they were founding members of another congregation, this time of Union United Presbyterian church, under the leadership of Rev. C. T. McCaughan. From this time, the fall of 1870, until Mr. Cowden's death, Dec. 9, 1895. they lived happily together, enduring the trials and blessings of pioneer life.

To them were given ten children, six of whom remain: Charles and Sadie of the home; Mrs. Andrew Shaffer and Mrs. H. L. Moore, of the community; John R., of Wessington Springs, S.D., and Mrs. C. W. Henderson of Ottawa, Kans. All were present at the mother's death. After Mr. Cowden's death she with two of the children, Sadie and Charles, continued the home until her passing.

She passed into the presence of Him who was her lord and her God, Aug. 22, 1921, aged 93 years, 9 months and 17 days. She was a faithful wife, an exceptionally kind and loving mother. Besides the children who mourn "the touch of a vanished hand, and the sound of a voice that is still," there remain 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at her late home by her pastor, assisted by C. E. Hawthorne and W. J. Stewart, former pastors.

Note: Burial was at Stringtown cemetery.
