Wednesday, January 11, 1922Death of MRS. JOHN A. GUIHER
The news that Mrs. John A. Guiher had passed away just before midnight on Jan. 7th, 1922, reached Winterset Sunday morning. A message had come from Rochester, Minn., on a Saturday afternoon, stating that her condition had been growing worse all day. Friends had been reassured during the week by encouraging bulletins as to her condition, following a critical operation performed on Dec. 30th, by Dr. Charles Mayo. Hence the announcement of her death was a geat shock to this community. The remains reached here Monday afternoon, accompanied by Mr. Guiher and Mrs. Maria Gilpin.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. LeRoy C. Cooley in the First Presbyterian church on Tuesday afternoon.
Mary L. Evans, a native of Winterset was the daughter of the late E. W. Evans, whose death took place when she was a small child. She and her mother, Mrs. Maria Gilpin, were companions of the deepest intimacy, and after her marriage to John A. Guiher in 1891, Mrs. Gilpin shared the home and interests of the Guihers. Mrs. Guiher was well educated, a deep student of events, of history and of the Bible, in particular. Church work was her toy, and her means was freely given to the service of missions, church support and the assistance of many individuals.
She was a long time member of the board of trustees of the Winterset public library, serving as a chairman of the book committee; a member of Chapter AG, P.E.O., and also of Abigail Adams chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
During her residence in Des Moines at the time of Mr. Guiher's duties as state railroad commissioner, Mrs. Guiher won numberless friends, who were attracted by her personality and abilities.
The sympathy of a wide acquaintance will be extended to the bereaved husband and mother.

Mary Louise Evans was born February 18, 1863, in Winterset, Iowa. After her graduation from the high school here she attended the Western College for Women at Oxford, Ohio, She also traveled extensively in this country and abroad. Hers was a gifted mind and she always Maintained and interest in her home affairs and also in the peace and progress of the world.
She was married in June 1891, to John A. Guiher. Her home was a center of true hospitality and she was loved and honored in the affections of many friends.
At an early age she united with the Presbyterian church and she was faithful to the end. Because of her intellectual gifts she became a Bible student of marked accomplishments.
She lived her religion in daily acts of kindness and generosity. Her Liberality was a constant joy in her life and she went about doing good. We feel sorrow because she has gone and we thank God for the blessing of her life while she was here.
Her mother, Mrs. Marie L. Gilpin and her husband, John A. Guiher, in the great sorrow which they have been called upon to experience have the consolation of knowing that they do not bear their bereavement alone. All who knew her have experienced a great loss.
In this dark hour it is the light of the Gospel which brings peace and comfort to our troubled hearts. We sorrow not as those who have no hope. The things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in their heavens.
The funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian church at 2;30 p. m. Tuesday afternoon led by the pastor, Rev. L. C. Cooley.
