Obituary

Mother Clearwater, relict of the late Levi Clearwater, is dead. For those who have known her infirmatives for past years this sad announcement will not be a surprise. She passed peacefully away on Sunday morning just as the eastern sunlight was glinting the heavens with the radiance of a new born day, and by a singular coincidence her spirit winged its way from the tired body just four months from the time her beloved husband, Levi died.

Elizabeth Clearwater was born in Tennessee on the 14th day of February 1811, and was 83 years, 8 months and 7 days old when she died. She had rounded out a life full of kindly acts which endeared her to all. As Elizabeth Donovan she plighted her faith to Levi Clearwater in Putnam county, Indiana, at the age of twenty-one where they lived happily until 1851, when they came to Knoxville in this state where they lived for 17 years until their removal to Winterset settling about a mile northeast on a fine farm which has been their home ever since or until about two years ago, when they came to town and made their home with a son-in-law, John Hull.

Eleven children blessed their union and all living except three, as follows: Mrs. John Hull, Mrs. A. J. Stiffler, Clara Clearwater, R. A. Clearwater, of Grinnell; Mrs. J. J. Stucky, of Des Moines; John Clearwater, D. W. Clearwater and Mrs. Ellen Stiffler, of Carthage, Mo., and all being present at the funeral except the latter.

She became a devoted member of the M. E. church with her deceased husband and remained in that faith until 1859, when both severed their connection with the church and joined the Seventh Day Advent church in which faith both died. She had been a faithful, though patient sufferer from complicated troubles, and when her beloved husband was laid at rest on the 21st day of June she became resigned to the thought that soon she would be called hence and laid by his side. She manifested a cheerfulness and patience born of a Christian spirit, and the impress other character will remain as a rich legacy to the large circle of friends who mourn her loss. Her kindly face and cheering words of counsel will be sadly missed, but far better the thought that she has found that peace that passeth no understanding.

The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the residence of John Hull. A touchingly beautiful sermon being preached by Rev. Fred Harris of the Methodist church. And so ends the life of two of our honored household whose presence will be missed, but it can be truly said of them the world was better for their having lived. "Well done good and faithful servants."
