Death of Chas. Miles

The funeral of Chas. Miles, nephew of Dan Miles, occurred at the Christian church in Patterson, Tuesday, March 14. The services were under the charge of the Odd Fellows and Modern Woodmen and the sermon by Rev. W. G. Riheldaffer. The deceased had been visiting in the neighborhood of Patterson, and was returning to Kansas accompanied by Willie Cunningham. Saturday at Staffordsville, Kansas during the blizzard they started to walk to the next station, and when about three-quarters of a mile from the station, Cunningham heard the roar of a train behind him and had barely time to jump off and call to Miles. The train struck Miles in the hip, breaking his legs and back. Cunningham walked back to the station in the storm to secure help and was almost in a state of prostration when he got there. Chas. Miles had many friends who are deeply grieved at his untimely death.

KILLED IN KANSAS

Charles Miles, of Crawford Township Meets a Violent Death

Charles Miles, a young man of 22 years, who has been working in Kansas, recently returned to visit his relatives near Patterson. When he went back to Kansas, a young man named Willie Cunningham accompanied him. During the blizzard last Saturday night the two were walking on the railroad track near Staffordville, Kas., Cunningham, who was about 20 feet behind Miles heard a train almost upon them. He jumped off the track and shouted to Miles, who attempted to jump also, but not quick enough to save himself for the train struck and killed him almost instantly. His hip was crushed and his back and one leg broken. He died without speaking.

The Woodmen of Staffordville took charge of the body and had it sent home. The funeral was held last Tuesday at the Christian church at Patterson, the service being conducted by Rev. W. G. Rihelddaffer of this place. The Woodmen and Odd Fellows had charge of the burial service.

Young Miles was a nephew of Isiah, Dan and H. H. Miles of Crawford township. His parents are dead.
