Death of Smith Lafferty

Smith Lafferty, whose critical illness was mentioned last week, passed away last Thursday night. Mr. Lafferty was among the older residents of Winterset, having come here from Ohio in 1865, if we are rightly informed, directly after the war, in which he discharged his duty as a patriotic American citizen by service as corporal in Co. I of the 16th Ohio Volunteers. Mr. Lafferty was one of those kindly warm-hearted men who pass through life with the friendship of all, and during his thirty or more years of residence in Winterset, we have yet to hear that he incurred a single enmity or called forth a single unkind work. He passed away at the age of seventy-seven, having fulfilled his duty in life as a kind husband, a good citizen, a brave soldier and a true christian.

The funeral was held at the home last Saturday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. W. G. Riheldaffer of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. B. E. S. Ely. The G.A.R. and Odd Fellows organizations attended the funeral, escorted the remains to the cemetery, and performed the burial service at the grave.

Obituary

Mr. Smith Lafferty, an old and respected citizen of Winterset, died at his home Thursday, March 9th, at 1:30 a.m.

Mr. Lafferty was born in Harrison county, Ohio, in 1821, and lived in that state until he moved to Iowa in 1855. He returned to Ohio in a year or two, but in 1865, came back to Iowa, where he resided until his death.

He married twice, his first marriage occurring in 1846, and to this union were born three children, only one of which survives him, Mrs. Florence Fitzgerald, of Des Moines. His second marriage was in June, 1863, to Miss Ann McIntire, who survives him.

When the rebellion broke out he enlisted in an Ohio company and gave his services to his country.

In 1873, he united with the M. E. church and has ever since lived a conscientious and devoted Christian life.
