Another Old Settler Gone

Uncle John Males died at the home of his son Richard on last Sunday after an illness of about ten days. He was one of the old settlers in this section and enjoyed the friendship of the entire community. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church Monday afternoon, conducted by Revs. J. W. Stribling and G. E. Nichols. Interment was in Earlham cemetery.

John Milton Males was born in Tennessee, April 18, 1825. He moved to Morgan county, Indiana, when quite young with his parents. Oct. 5, 1848, he was married to Nancy Mendenhall in Marion county, Indiana. They moved to Warren county, Iowa, in 1852, and a few months later to Dallas county, near Bear Creek. In 1874 they returned to Warren county, for two years, then came to Earlham, which has since been their home.

To them was born five sons and one daughter, Martha J. Mendenhall and Edward W. have passed on before, Richard S., Nathan, and Enoch of this place and William E. of Milo today mourn the loss of a father.

The home was broken up by the death of the wife and mother, Dec. 23, 1901. Since then the father has found a welcome home with his son, Richard.

About twenty-five years ago, “Uncle Johnny” as he was familiarly called joined the United Brethren church at Pleasant Hill, of which he remained a faithful member.

During the last five years his health was broken, and many days and weeks were passed in great suffering. But there was no murmur nor complaint. All was borne with patience and Christian fortitude. He crossed over the river to his “new home” Aug. 16, 1903, aged 78 years, 3 months, 28 days.

V. H. Males, of Des Moines, came up Monday to attend his grandfather’s funeral.
