Obituary

Fred Casteel died at his father’s residence Sunday morning, aged a little over eighteen, having been born in this city in July 1884. Some months ago while working at his trade, that of printer, in Earlham he was attacked with severe pulmonary ulceration and consumption rapidly completed the destruction of what only two or three years ago, seemed to be a vigorous healthy life. He is survived by his father, Martin Casteel, and three sisters. His mother, Alice Martin Casteel, died about 2 years ago. While working in Earlham he professed conversion and united with the Friends church and thereafter lived in accordance with its teachings. He was a young man of intelligence and aptness to acquire knowledge and skill.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. W. Matheny, the interment being in the Winterset cemetery.

Locals

Fred Casteel died at his home in Winterset Sunday morning after an illness of some six months. Consumption was the cause of his death. He worked in the ECHO office last winter and spring, and was a most faithful worker. It is with sincere regret we write the announcement of his death, as he was a promising young man and gave every indication of developing into a useful citizen.

Fred Everett Casteel died at his fathers’ home in Winterset Oct. 19, 1902, aged 18 years, 4 months and 9 days.

A year previous to his death he began work in the printing office at Earlham, in which he continued until last July when he was compelled to give up his work on account of ill health. During the revival meeting last February he was converted and joined the Friends church of which he has been a faithful and devoted member during the past months.

He was patient and uncomplaining during his sickness. During the past weeks he often expressed a wish to get well if it was the Lord’s will, but if not he was willing to go and be with his Savior and mother who had preceded him to the better land some two years ago. He leaves a father, three sisters, with a host of friends and associates to mourn his loss.

It may well be said of him “He has fought a good fight, he has finished his course, he has kept his faith; henceforth there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give him at that day. -----------A FRIEND
