LOYD WEARMOUTH, DES MOINES

Loyd E. “Wormie” Wearmouth, 84, of Des Moines died Feb. 8, 2008, at the Kavanagh House on 56th in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial was at Lorimor Cemetery with military honors presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1797 of Creston and American Legion Post 96 of Lorimor. Memorial contributions may be directed to the discretion of the family.

Loyd Wearmouth was born Aug. 6, 1923, in rural Madison County to William and Ethel Ellen (Campfield) Wearmouth. He spent his youth in Lorimor and Winterset, graduating from Lorimor High School. His marriage to Ruth Courtney took place March 1, 1944, in St. Louis, Mo. He lived in Stillwater, Minn., for many years and in Des Moines for the past 15 years. Loyd served in the United States Army during World War II as a heavy machine gunner. He fought in battles in Ardennes, Rhineland, Battle of the Bulge and campaigns in Central Europe. He and his unit received the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. Loyd also received two Purple Hearts. During his life, Loyd farmed, worked as a lineman on the railroad, and was an over-the-road semi-driver for 30 years. After retiring from trucking, he worked as a painter, carpenter, builder and security guard.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Urbandale; two daughters, Connie Broesder and Julia Wearmouth, both of Urbandale; three sons, Craig Wearmouth of Ogden, Walter Wearmouth of Des Moines and Todd Wearmouth of Hudson, Wis.; one stepson, Tom Keller of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Verlene Simmerman of Hysham, Mont., and Lucille Gabbert and Lurene Orwan, both of Cherokee Village, Ark.; and 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
