M.W. “Hurd” Hatfield, 82, of Brunswick, Ga., died Jan. 12, 2008, at the Brunswick Hospital of Southeast Georgia Health System following a brief illness.
Hurd Hatfield was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Greeley, Colo., to Glen R. and Fern (Harpole) Hatfield. In 1929, the family returned to Madison County, where he graduated from St. Charles High School in 1942. In June 1943, Hurd enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served 23 years in the service — including World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His marriage to Dona L. Browne of St. Charles took place June 20, 1948. Upon retirement from the Navy, he and his family resided in Brunswick, Ga., where he founded and operated H & T Locks, Inc., a professional lock service, for 21 years. He later worked as a security consultant for a number of years. Hurd was a member of American Legion Post 9, VFW Post 2588, BPO Elks Lodge 691, Fleet Reserve Association - Branch 30, and F&AM Model Lodge 315 of St. Charles, of which he was a member for more than 50 years.
He was preceded in death by two infant sisters and a great-granddaughter, Eryanna Jones.
He is survived by his wife, Dona, of Brunswick, Ga.; two daughters, Diane Hughes and Leone Jones, both of Brunswick, Ga.; two sisters, Audrey Platnick of New York City and Marjorie Wetzel of St. Charles; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
