DEATH OF GRANT NELSON

Grant Nelson, a former Winterset and Madison county resident, died at his home in Benson, Minnesota, Saturday evening, February 2, at six o’clock. Mr. Nelson who was 69 years of age, had been having heart trouble, for the past three years, but his last illness was of short duration.

Mr. Nelson came to this county when he was a young man, about 30 years of age. They located on a farm, eight miles west of Winterset, known as the William Reed farm, and they resided there until they moved to Winterset, about 31 years ago. In March 1926, they moved to Benson, Minnesota where they have since made their home.

He is survived by his wife and five children: Roy Nelson of Benson, Ray of Peru, Mary Jones of Benson, Ethel Bush of Orient and Zella Jones of Winterset.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Nelson left Sunday morning for Benson, but word has not yet been received as to when the funeral was held.

Ulysses S. Grant Nelson was born December 5, 1865 near Dayton, Ohio the son of Jacob and Mary Nelson.

He departed from this world on February 2nd, 1935, at 6:30 at his home at Benson, Minnesota, at the age of 69 years, one month and 28 days. He was married to Ivy Florence Neis on October 26, 1890 at Cory, Indiana.

In January 1891 they moved to Illinois and lived there until 1902. He then moved to Iowa settling on a farm for two years, then moving to Winterset, and worked at the tinner and plumbing trade for a number of years. He broke down with tuberculosis in 1910 and went to the Modern Woodman sanitarium near Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was there eight months and returned to his home a rested cure. He then worked at his trade until nine years ago. He then moved to Minnesota near Holloway on a farm. He lived there three years and broke down in health then he went to live with his son Roy. He lived there until June 1934, when he moved to Benson, Minnesota, and lived until death.

He was raised in a Methodist home and later years he with his family united with the Church of Christ of Winterset, Iowa.

After moving to Minnesota he and his wife united with the Methodist church of Holloway. He was always a faithful member as long as his health would permit.

He is survived by his wife and five children. Three daughters and two sons. The children are Ethel, Mrs. T. J. Bush of Orient, Iowa; Mary, Mrs. W. A. Jones of Benson, Minnesota; Zella, Mrs. Arthur C. Jones of Winterset, Iowa. The twin sons Ray Nelson of Peru, Iowa and Roy Nelson of Benson, Minnesota. Twenty grandchildren and one great grandchild, two brothers, John and James Nelson, eight nephews and two nieces of Stanton, Indiana and a host of friends.
