Malcolm Marshall McKenzie, 89, of Des Moines, died on Monday, November 6, 2006 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a brief illness. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 13 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Malcolm was born February 8, 1917 on his paternal grandparents' farm east of Winterset, the only child of William Leslie and Minnie Marshall McKenzie. He was raised on a farm near Monmouth, Ill., where his mother was from. Malcolm graduated from Monmouth High School and earned his B.S. degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Il. He worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Peoria before serving in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. Malcolm moved to Des Moines after his tour of duty and earned his M.A. degree from Drake University.

Malcolm was one of the deans of the Des Moines stockbroker community with customers across Iowa and the nation. He worked for the securities firm of Thomson and McKinnon for five years before joining Merrill Lynch in 1954. He retired as Vice President of Merrill Lynch & Co. in October 1997 at the age of 80 after 48 years in the securities business.

His interests included travel, photography, music, dancing, politics, University of Iowa athletics, U.S. Civil War history, and attending corporate annual meetings, In addition to his church, Malcolm was a long-time member of the Des Moines Embassy Club, the Des Moines Host Lions Club, the Terpsichorean Ballroom Dance Club and the Des Moines Civil War Roundtable. He was a past president of the Iowa Lions Sight Conservation Foundation and had received the Melvin Jones Fellowship, one of the highest Lions recognitions. Malcolm was also active in alumni activities for Drake and Bradley Universities.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara McKenzie and a son Gordon McKenzie, both of Des Moines, and two first cousins, Dr. Katheryne Stout of Des Moines and Dr. Colin Stout of Vancouver, WA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Abel McKenzie.

A visitation will be held at Dunn's Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or to the University of Iowa Foundation for the UI Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
