REV. DAVID STREYFFELER, ST. CHARLES

The Rev. David Eugene Streyffeler, 84, of St. Charles died Jan. 11, 2008, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. Charles Parish. Family will visit with friends one hour prior to services in the fellowship hall of the church. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Charles Parish or the Alzheimer’s Association.

David Streyffeler was born June 7, 1923, in Monroe to Harlan and Opal (Howell) Streyffeler and was a graduate of North High School in Des Moines. He additionally received degrees from Simpson College in Indianola and Boston University School of Theology in Boston, Mass.

On May 27, 1945, he was united in marriage to Belva E. Black. Together, they served churches in Lawrence and Easthampton, Mass. David also served as assistant pastor of the First Methodist Church in Boston while attending seminary. They returned to Iowa to serve the Merrill-Hinton, Mallard-Curlew, Jesup-Raymond, Decorah-Burr Oak charges. David’s other assignments included Trinity Waverly, St. Luke’s Dubuque and Grace Burlington before retiring in 1987 following 45 years in the pastorate. He held various conference positions on the historical, worship and adult committees, along with the Program Review Committee for the Conference Council on Ministries. He was a certified lab instructor in adult education and, while at Waverly, chaired the District Local Church Task Force for Parish Development in Naperville, Ill. He was president of DACU in Dubuque, a group committed to developing greater understanding of the various traditions and plans for mutual strategy to help meet religious and community needs. David also was involved in the conference camping program for 25 years.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, James Eugene, and a brother, Vern.

He is survived by his wife, Belva; a brother, Sam Streyffeler of Des Moines; and two sisters, Marian Easter of Des Moines and Carol Needham of Green.
