MARY ANNE PORTER, WINTERSET

Mary Anne Porter, 87, of Winterset died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Winterset Care Center North.

Visitation will be held from 10–11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset with funeral services immediately following at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice, Winterset. Online condolences may be sent to the family at ochiltree.com.

Mary Anne was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Potwin, Kan., the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Fulton) Long. She graduated from Elk Point (South Dakota) High School and later from Tri-State College of Commerce in Sioux City, Iowa. Her marriage to James Martin Porter took place Sept. 17, 1941, in Grant City, Mo.

Mary Anne worked for Northwestern Bell for 28 and one-half years as an operator in Winterset and then in finance in Des Moines. She also was a member of the Communications Workers of America Local 7102 and the Pioneers Club. Mary Anne and James enjoyed camping and fishing in Minnesota and Iowa and wintering in Arizona and Texas. She liked to crochet, loved animals and made great homemade noodles her family enjoyed.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Dillinger, and husband Larry of Bella Vista, Ark.; her son, David Porter, and wife Martha of State Center; a daughter-in-law, Victoria Porter of Des Moines; nine grandchildren — Jeffrey, Ramona, Eric, Karri, Gregory, Kristine, Rodney, Lori and LeAnna; 21 great-grandchildren — Jeramy, Julie, Ethan, Evan, Branten, Owen, Courtney, Kenadey, Grace, Jackson, Ross, Rachel, Riley, Georgia, Jalen, Tia, Anthony, Andrew, Brock, Salena and Vincent; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Joel Wennblom; her husband of 65 years, James Martin Porter; a son, Larry Porter; and three siblings — Edna, Ruth and Paul Long.
