Alfred Leon Wetrich was born the son of Bernie and Hazel Dickey Wetrich in Penn Township, rural Madison County, Iowa on October 20, 1920. He died at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on Thursday January 18, 2007 at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 29 days.

Leon, as he was commonly known, graduated from Earlham High School. He and Catherine Stoll were married in Maquoketa, Iowa on April 7, 1944. This union was blessed with one son Jim. Leon and Catherine farmed in the Clinton, Iowa area before moving to Earlham in 1955 and continued to farm in the Penn Center area of Madison County until they retired to live in Earlham. Leon was an active woodworker, making rockers, chairs, wooden puzzles, furniture and even a working wooden model airplane. He also crafted several pieces of stained glass. Leon and Catherine traveled from time to time to visit relatives, however mostly stayed near home.

Leon was a member of the Penn Center Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and socializing with friends.

Leon leaves the following family to celebrate his life: son Jim Wetrich and wife Joanne of Redfield, IA; sister Lola Jackson of Clinton, IA; 7 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents Bernie and Hazel Wetrich and his wife Catherine who died in 2003.

Memorial services were held for Alfred Leon Wetrich on Monday, January 22, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Penn Center Methodist Church in Rural Earlham, Iowa.

Pastor Charles Thompson officated. Marcella McCleary was the organist. Organ solos were "The Lords' Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art".

Interment of cremains was held at the Penn Center Cemetery of rural Earlham, Iowa. Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
