May 2007Funeral Mass was held for Hazel Maxine Stewart at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2007 at the St. John's Catholic Church in Adel, Iowa. Father Al Shirbo officiated.
Altar servers were J.D. and Justin Hopp. Organist was Lisa Hopp. Soloist/cantor was Mike Cooper singing "On Eagles Wings", "Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee", "Eye Has Not Seen", and "Be Not Afraid". Readers were sons-in-law, Richard Rhoades and Jim Wolfe. Gift bearers were the grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Nephews Dennis Dawson, Jack Kelly, Alan Olson, Gary Olson, Marvin Stewart, Ronald Thomas. Honorary pallbearers were Randy Smith and Ronald Smith.
Hazel Maxine Stewart, 84 of Earlham, died at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines on Thursday. She was a two time cancer survivor and succumbed to a third cancer, May 3, 2007.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Van Meter on February 28, 1923 to A. C. and Anna (Forret) Smith. Hazel graduated Van Meter Community School and AIB business school in Des Moines. Hazel was a 1940 Des Moines Register All-State Girls' Basketball Team Selection.
She married Roy J. Stewart, also of Van Meter, at Fort Meade, Maryland in 1943. To this union were born four daughters and a son. They lived and farmed near Van Meter until 1963, when they purchased a farm north of Earlham. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, a Women's District Farm Bureau Chairman and a member of the Sunshine Circle. She loved her family, playing cards, gardening and watching basketball and football.
She is survived by her husband Roy, children: Diana (John) Houlette of Des Moines; Gwen (Richard) Rhoades of Topeka, KS; Mary (Sam) Shepherd of Riverside; Lyle (Cherylann) of Marengo, Ann (Jim) Wolfe of Taylorville, IL; three sisters: Alice Hazen of Winterset; Margaret Olson of Urbandale; Mary Ann Dawson of Dallas Center; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, sisters Louise Smith, Agnes Loose, Irene Kelly and brothers Alfred and Robert Smith.
Interment was held at the Van Meter Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
