SANDRA JOHNSON, EARLHAM

Sandra Lee (Queck) Johnson was born Oct. 11, 1949, in Creston, Iowa, to Ervin and Thelda (Mangels) Queck. She died Dec. 22, 2007, in rural Dallas County, Iowa.

Sandra grew up on the family farm northwest of Fontanelle and was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. She attended Jackson No. 1 country school through the fifth grade and graduated from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School with the class of 1967. She also graduated from Southwestern Community College in 1969 and attended the University of Northern Iowa.

On Jan. 26, 1970, she married Dale Johnson at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. To this union two children, Bradley Allen and Melissa Sue, were born. They settled in Earlham in 1974 and made the area their permanent home.

Sandra spent her professional life in many varied capacities — including antiques dealer, real estate agent, claims adjuster for CIGNA Insurance, and Homeless Services Coordinator for Dallas County Crisis Intervention. She was currently employed as a customer service representative at Younkers Department Store — a job she enjoyed because she could “fix people’s problems.”

She loved traveling with her family, shopping, crocheting, and spending time with her granddaughters, Lindsey and Carly, who were the true joy of her life. She was always concerned with the welfare of others and making life peaceful and comfortable for those around her.

Sandra loved life and was never afraid to try a new experience. She enjoyed collecting, especially 1950s cowboy memorabilia. It was the little things in life that gave her the most pleasure.

Dale and Sandra were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church, helping it grow from a small one-room sanctuary into its present form.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her parents, Ervin and Thelda Queck; a sister, Susan O’Hara; and her father-in-law, Earl Johnson.

She is survived by a son, Brad Johnson, and his wife, Marsha, of West Des Moines; a daughter, Melissa Johnson-Scranton, and her husband, Michael Scranton, of Oakland, Calif.; two granddaughters, Lindsey Johnson and Carly Johnson of West Des Moines; two sisters, Nancy Queck of Greenfield and Terri Queck-Matzie of Fontanelle; her mother-in-law, Bertha Johnson of Fontanelle; three brothers-in-law, Dennis Johnson and wife Wanda of Fontanelle, Randy Johnson of Clive and fiancée Patty Mueller of Urbandale, and Craig Johnson of Glenwood; sister-in-law Jana Teachout and husband Mike of Clive; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Peace Lutheran Church near Earlham, with burial in the Fontanelle Cemetery. The family greeted friends Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle. Memorials may be directed to the Sandra Johnson Memorial Fund.
